Bathroom Remodeling in Lansing, MI
There is one thing worth fixing in a mid-Michigan bathroom that has nothing to do with how it looks: if your supply pipes run through an exterior wall, the remodel is the only affordable chance you will get to move them.

Doing it after the remodel means opening finished tile, re-waterproofing, and re-tiling to match a batch you no longer have. That is why the same work costs several times more the second time round.
If you have ever had a pipe freeze in that bathroom, or if you run a trickle from the tap on cold nights, this is not a hypothetical. Put it in the scope.
If the lines genuinely cannot be moved - sometimes they cannot - the fallback is to insulate on the cold side of the pipe rather than the warm side, so the pipe sits inside the thermal envelope. Say this to your contractor explicitly; it is a detail that gets missed.
A frozen supply line that splits inside a finished wall is one of the more expensive domestic water events, because the water runs for as long as it takes someone to notice.
Making 40 square feet work
The standard hall bathroom in this housing stock is 5 by 8 feet with a tub across the short end. You will not make it bigger without taking space from somewhere else, and that is usually not worth it. Almost all the available gain is in layout and fittings.

The other cold-climate details
- Exhaust fan ducted to the outside, not into the attic. In this climate an attic-vented fan condenses moisture on the underside of the roof deck all winter and grows mold.
- Insulated duct on that fan run, so the warm moist air does not condense inside the pipe and run back down.
- In-floor electric heat under tile. In a cold climate this is one of the few upgrades people genuinely never regret, and it is inexpensive while the floor is already up.
- A properly sealed and insulated attic hatch if the bathroom has one - it is a large hole in the ceiling of a wet room.
